Nightingale Class

Welcome to Nightingale Class  
In Science, we have been learning about the skeleton, its main bones and their functions.  We worked really well, in teams, to build the skeleton up on a large-scale and we then labelled the diagram with the bone labels.
In English, we have been writing poems.  We created our own anthologies and also made manuscripts onto which we wrote and illustrated our poems.

Spring 2


We have had a very busy second half term in Mozart Class. On top of all the extra workshops we have taken part in this half term we have been busy learning more about the Amazon Rainforest.


Our enquiry based learning in geography has been to question why it is so wet and humid in the Amazon. We carried out small investigations about evaporation to help us. This included Isaac painting our class name ‘Mozart’ onto the playground one sunny morning, with water, and watching as the name ‘disappeared’. We also had two dishes of water on the windowsill, one with and one without a lid and discussed why there was still water in the dish with the lid but none in the latter.


Some of the children were then able to make links with the heat of Brazil and the water of the Amazon River to discover the principles of convectional rainfall to explain why it does rain so much in the Amazon Rainforest!




We are finishing the term with our DT project, the design brief being: Design a Tropical Pancake Fruit Delight for the characters of our class reader ‘The Explorer’. The children have tasted  numerous tropical fruits, deciding on which ones to use for their final product. Some tasted better than others!


They now have the task of preparing a pancake batter and cooking the pancakes before following their design ideas to create their very own Tropical Pancake Fruit Delight! I’m sure they will all enjoy eating their finished work!

Our role play has been turned into the      Amazon Rainforest based on our class reader ‘The Explorer’ and our new topic Amazing  Amazon!


We have been busy finding about the features of non-chronological reports, researching some incredible facts about the Amazon Rainforest and are in the process of writing our own reports. Read this introduction to see if it entices you to read further.


Welcome to the Amazon! The Amazon is the world's most colossal  rainforest. The country it's in is Brazil and the continent is South America. A rainforest is a piece of land with a large number of trees. There are also many new animals yet to find in the Amazon.

In RE we’ve been thinking about the wonderful world around us as we have heard about the Christian creation story, explored our outside grounds for wonderful things and thought about how we should look after our world and keep what God has created for us as well as we can.


News from Mozart Class [Autumn 2]


Mozart class has been very fortunate this half term to have not one but two workshops, kindly paid for by the FPSA. The first one was to help us commemorate WW1 where actor Paul took the roles of Arthur, a young man who signed up to fight as well as other various characters involved in the war effort. It was both realistic and emotional and the children gained an awful lot from it.



The second workshop was all about a trip to the rainforest and again, all children were extremely engaged and the information they gathered in a short space of time will hopefully help them with their creative writing this half term.


We have just started our latest DT project - a unit all about wheels and axles. We started off by examining a range of wheeled products to see how they work, then learned the correct vocabulary to help us understand the mechanisms of a wheeled product. We are now going to be deigning and  making a wheeled cart (linked to our class reader ‘The Explorer’) to help the characters in the story collect food from the Amazon Rainforest!


Autumn 1


We kick started our topic ‘Let’s Go Exploring’ with a visit into a planetarium where we learned lots of facts about our solar system and space.


In Science this term we have been learning about the differences between dead. alive and never alive as well as exploring our senses and our different body parts.



 I sorted these things:

Alive: a dog, seaweed and a tree.

Dead: a bag of crisps, a pencil and fishfingers 

Never alive: a laptop and a mug



We were given crisps and we had to guess the flavour with our tongue. We used our sense of taste to help us!



In RE we’ve been thinking about promises and the covenant between God and Abraham. These are our starry night pictures to remember the promise God made to Abraham.




We’ve started the term thinking back to our summer holidays and the wonderful places we visited. We compared them with our local area and thought about what made them different.

Our topic this term in Mozart class is ‘Let’s Go Exploring!’

Our role play has several modes of transport including a rocket, airplane and hot air balloon.

During the term we will be finding out about four well known explorers spanning different periods of history. We’re starting off by learning about Neil Armstrong and space exploration and have a planetarium visiting us at school so we can explore our solar system!

In Mozart class this term we are enjoying learning about World War One in our topic ‘Let’s Not Forget!’

We started the term reading the lovely picture book ‘The Little Hen and the Great War, the stimulus for a lot of our learning this term.

We have used a lot of role play to discover and understand how the war started and the many countries involved in this lengthy war – making a paper chain to hang in the classroom to show the names of these countries, near and far.


We have had a wonderful workshop called the A-Z of WW1, finding out many different events and facts about this period in history.

In science we have been finding out about the seasons and have just started a project using different areas in the school grounds. Each month we will make observations of our area to make comparisons between the different seasons – seeing the effect at first hand.
