The Role of the Governing Body

Furneux Pelham C of E School has a Governing Body that is responsible for leadership, providing structure and for holding the school to account.  The Head Teacher is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school and the operation of the curriculum and reports to the Governing Body. The Governing Body is not directly involved in day-to-day management, but shapes the school via three main functions:

  • Ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Hold the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and the performance management of the staff; and
  • Oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent.

The National Governance Association (NGA) asks that governing bodies have a fourth function which is to ensure communication with all stakeholders is maintained and developed.

How the Governors work

The Full Governing Body (FGB) meets once every half term. We use these meetings to take reports from the Head Teacher and our own committees and make sure we are doing everything required of us by law, by Hertfordshire County Council, and by OFSTED.

Much of the Governors’ work is done by our committees which also meet once every half term but who also work from day to day. We have committees for Curriculum and Pupil Welfare and Resources (Personnel, Finance & Premises).

Policies

An important legal task for the Governors is to make sure the school has a proper set of policies in place. Policies are a guide for both staff and parents as to how the school must be run. You can download our most important policies from within the School Information page.
